On May 22 2024, The University of Tartu Library organized a seminar titled “Science for All: How Society Makes Science Better,” which focused on citizen science and public engagement.
With over a decade of advocacy for open science, the library emphasized the importance of citizen science, involving public participation in scientific research. The seminar explored how universities and libraries could engage citizens in scientific projects and highlighted various methods for volunteer involvement.
The event featured presentations on models and practices of citizen science, the role of university libraries in fostering academia-society connections, and the preservation of cultural heritage. The first half of the training day was conducted in Estonian by presenters from University of Tartu, Estonian University of Life Sciences, Estonian Research Council and Estonian Cooperation Assembly. It was followed by an English-language workshop by Doctor Henk Mulder from the University of Gröningen who shared how the science shop format has been utilized in the Netherlands.
The event was attended by 40 professionals from Estonian libraries, universities and other organizations.
The seminar was funded by the Erasmus+ project LibOCS (2021-1-EE01-KA220-HED-000031125).
