How to tame and become a part of citizen science? How to get involved, involve others and what role the library can play in promoting the public’s knowledge of citizen science? Library staff could hear about this in specially organized 8 academic hour training “Citizen science for librarians: self-study course”, which took place on 25th April, 2023 at the Vytautas Magnus University (Kaunas, Lithuania).

During the training, the participants listened to the content of five theoretical modules about the role of libraries and librarians in citizen science, the formation of skills of librarians involved in citizen science, involvement and communication in citizen science projects, they got acquainted with the principles of project management and the most important aspects of research and data management. The trainees also performed practical tasks directly related to the topics covered: performed exercises to understand the role of a librarian, discussed the benefits of citizen science projects for science, society and participants themselves, created a communication plan based on a simulated situation, solved situation assessment exercises. The e-course “Citizen science for librarians: self-study course” developed within the framework of the LibOCS project was as well presented to the participants of the training event.

21 librarians of Vytautas Magnus University and Kaunas County Public Library participated in the training, and they were all awarded with the training participant certificates.

The understanding of the citizen science phenomenon and its possibilities, as well as the library’s mediating capabilities formed during the workshop is a particularly valuable experience that opens up new perspectives for libraries and society.
